Chapter Thirteen

Jo tried Cass’s number at the first coffee shop she came to. People hurrying past clutching cardboard cups and paper bags of food had made her realise she was hungry and she had tagged on to the end of a queue. She studied the blackboard above the counter, while listening to Cass’s number ring out. Not very promising, she thought. Could Vaz have been just fobbing her off? She had no idea why he should choose to help her but decided it was still worth putting some effort into finding the woman.

The sandwich shop was another of those places where she felt under pressure to choose and if she wasn’t careful she would end up with either something hideous like a crabmeat and beetroot sandwich or something boring like cheese and pickle. She had only read about a quarter of the blackboard by the time the woman behind the counter looked in her direction. Staying cool under pressure from the restive queue behind her, Jo chose a baguette filled with Brie and grapes and an Americano.

She ate it standing up, leaning against a minuscule table in an ambience about as relaxed as a station waiting room where everyone was expecting their train to be announced. She tried Cass’s number again with no luck and studied the maps on her phone to see how long it would take to get to her address. By the time she was halfway through her baguette, she had decided she needed to take the overground train to Stonebridge, which was somewhere near Wembley.

After the short journey, she had to consult her phone again and, when she was sure where she was going, she set off down a road that seemed to be a row of small shops punctuated by high-rise blocks of flats. She turned into a narrower road where every other shop seemed to be a betting shop. One unfamiliar supermarket had windows covered with wire mesh and groups of people standing around outside who avoided eye contact. Jo walked past a pub with a very loud television shouting from the dark bar. A group of men standing outside with glasses in their hands made the most of Jo’s passing to alleviate their boredom.

When she turned left again, she stopped in the next shop doorway for a quick glance at the phone screen. This was the kind of area where she wanted to look like she knew where she was going so she memorised the next few directions and zipped the phone into her bag. With only one wrong turning, she ended up in the right street and walked past another bookies, a newsagents and an off-licence, looking for Cass’s house. Virtually everyone who passed her stared at her, which did not make her feel any more comfortable.

She soon found it — a tall town house with walls that had once been painted white, and steps up to a porch tiled with marked and cracked quarry tiles. Beside the large, peeling front door was a cluster of doorbells, some with names stuck on with yellowing tape beside them.
